CDR Curtis Brown

Senior Naval Science Instructor

     Commander Brown was born in Newport News, VA.  He graduated from Hampton High School in Hampton, VA., enlisted in the Navy in 1983 and entered the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS).   Upon completion of NAPS he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Science.

     CDR Brown then attended Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) Division Officer Course in Newport, RI followed by assignment to USS MILWAUKEE (AOR 2) where he served as Communications Officer, Electronics Material Officer, and Auxiliaries Officer. During this tour , he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer. His next assignment was as Damage Control Assistant on USS BIDDLE (CG 34).  Following this tour, he reported to Readiness Support Group, Norfolk as the Contracts Officer.

     CDR Brown attended Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) Department Head School.  Following Department Head School, he assumed duties as Chief Engineer on USS PENSACOLA (LSD 38).  He then reported to Commander, Amphibious Squadron ELEVEN in Sasebo, Japan as the Squadron Material/Logistics Officer.  He was then assigned as Division Head for the BoilerWater/FeedWater Curriculum at Surface Warfare Officers School Newport, RI.

     CDR Brown was assigned as Executive Officer, USS TRENTON (LPD 14).  Following this tour , he served as Surface Ship Program Manager, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Norfolk, VA.  He then served as Chief Staff Officer at Maritime Expeditionary Security Group TWO (formerly Naval Coastal Warfare Group TWO).  During this tour, he completed studies earning a Masters of Science degree in Education from Old Dominion University.  

     His final tour was as Surface Training Officer at Commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command, Norfolk, VA.

First Sergeant Felix Robles

Naval Science Instructor

     First Sergeant Robles was born on February 28, in the Bronx, New York. He joined the Marine Corps on December 21, 1976, upon completion of recruit training at Parris Island and training with the “D” Company Infantry Training School at Camp Pendleton, California. He then joined Company I 3rdBattalion, Ninth Marines as an automatic rifleman and also served with Company “F” 2nd Battalion as a squad leader in Okinawa, Japan. While in Okinawa, he took part in numerous operations including Team Spirit, a Battalion Landing Team, and completed 3rd Marine Dive Squad Leader School.

     Upon transfer to CONUS, he joined Weapons Training Battalion, Parris Island, South Carolina as a pistol instructor and then later as a Primary Marksmanship Instructor form June 1979 until his transfer to MCAS Cherry point, North Carolina in January of 1981. There he was assigned to MWSG-27 in the supply field. After completing basic NCO Warehouse School in Camp Johnson, North Carolina, he was assigned MOS 3051, his duty included warehouse clerk and warehouse Chief of WTS-27.

     In September of 1983, he was assigned to Hawk Missile Crewman School in Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. Upon graduation, he was assigned to 3rd Light Antiaircraft Missile Battalion, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, North Carolina, as a Hawk Missile Operator; he also served with the 2nd MAW Rifle and Pistol Team in which he participated in various Marksmanship Competitions and NRA Rifle matches.

     In April of 1988, he was ordered to the Drill field at Parris Island, South Carolina. While on the Drill field he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Training Chief for 1st Battalion until August of 1990. He was once again ordered to MCAS Cherry point and assigned to a B Battery, 3rdLAAM BN and was deployed to Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where he served as a Support Platoon Commander.

      Upon the units return from the Persian Gulf, he was assigned to Battery Gunnery Sergeant for H&S Btry. He served as an Inspector for the Inspector General Team for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and as Company Gunnery Sergeant for the Awards and Retirement Honor Company for the Wing.

     In June of 1994, 1st Sgt Robles was assigned to Marine Corps Security Force Training Company as a student for the Cadre Instructor course in Northwest, Chesapeake, Virginia. Upon graduation his duty assignment was in Norfolk Naval Station, where he instructed Navy Sailors and civilian police in weapons and was the director of the Navy Auxiliary Security Force Academy. Promoted to his present rank he was reassigned.

     From September of 1995 until August of 1996, 1st Sgt Robles served as Company First Sergeant, Marine Corps Security Forces Company, Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia. In September of 1996, 1st Sgt Robles was ordered to Marine Barracks, Washington DC, where he served as First Sergeant of H&S Company. In September of 1998, 1st Sgt Robles reported for his final tour of duty as Company First Sergeant, United States Naval Academy Company, Marine Barracks, and Washington DC.

     While attending College at ODU, and serving as a Operation Manager for a Hampton Road Security Company of 300 Armed Security Officers, he accepted an position as a Naval Science Instructor at Green Run High School in the NJROTC program. Since his arrival the unit has been to Area Five (State) Championship every year, and to the National Championship four times, and in 2006 Daytona All-Service National Championship, and Navy National Championship in 2009, 2010, 2011,  2013, 2014, and 2015. In 2011, they took 1st place at National in Armed Exhibition. 

     1st Sgt Robles is married to the former Milagros Medina of the Bronx, New York; they have two sons, Michael Phillip, and Matthew David. The family is currently residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia. 1st Sgt Robles attained his Associate of Science Degree from Tidewater Community College, and is presently attending classes at ODU, his personal awards includes Meritorious Service Medal, and two Navy/Marine Corps Achievement medals.

Commanding Officer

Officer in command of a military unit. Typically, the commanding officer has ultimate authority over the unit, and is usually given wide latitude to run the unit as he or she sees fit, within the bounds of military law.
